In her native Netherlands, Olcay Gulsen is best known as the owner of SuperTrash retailers, and a judge on Project Catwalk, the Dutch answer to Project Runway. This year has proven to be incredibly busy for the woman known amongst friends as “Super OJ”. Last month, SuperTrash launched their U.S. flagship store in Soho, where New Yorkers can look forward to affordable high-end fashions, not unlike what IKEA has done with home furnishings. Earlier this year, Gulsen launched her namesake line which features luxe textiles in body-skimming, minimalist silhouettes.
Born to Kurdish-Armenian parents, Gulsen began designing her own clothes as a way to stay fashionable within her family’s modest budget. At the age of 21, Gulsen’s career began with Chill Agency, a hiring firm for fashion industry jobs, which later burgeoned into fashion distributor 2Stepzahead. After meeting designer Ava Riley at an after party for Jimmy Choo, the two launched SuperTrash in 2004, and the rest is history.
